Shortest Parade in Wichita
June 29, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm
I was contacted by the Life Enrichment Director, Vickie, at LakePoint Retirement Center with a very touching request. There are many residents at this center who are WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. Coincidentally, my father was a resident at this facility prior to his passing five years ago and was also a Vietnam veteran. The residents had commented that they miss going to parades because they can’t be in the weather, whether it be the hot sun or cold temperatures, for long periods of time and getting to and from the parade was too difficult for them. So four years ago, Vickie started the Shortest Parade in Wichita so a parade could come to them! They can sit right outside their front door in lawn chairs and enjoy the pageantry of the day.
The parade is held in the parking lot of LakePoint’s 14 ½ acre campus. The parade is about 1/8th of a mile long. After the parade, everyone is invited to stay and visit with the residents and enjoy free hot dogs, chips, and sodas. There is also line dancing with music provided by a DJ who will also announce the groups as they pass through the middle of the parade.
The American Legion Riders have been riding in the parade since the inception. This year the Rosie Riders and Krome Kitties have been invited. Vickie only just recently found out there are women bike clubs too! Say What??
I have responded to Vickie to count us in! I know this being a workday prevents many of you from participating, but since it is the Shortest Parade in Wichita, perhaps some of you can break away from your office for a bit. Those of you who do not work, I hope you can plan to attend this. I asked Vickie if those Tom Kat’s who don’t work can attend. She enthusiastically said YES! When you RSVP, please let me know if your Tom Kat will attend. I’m thinking the Kitties will go as a group and the Tom Kat’s will be right behind us.
Line up is at 9:30 with the parade beginning at 10:30.
I wanted to include Vickie’s last paragraph. This says it all…
“I want to thank you for your consideration in participating in our 4th annual “Shortest Parade in Wichita,” and for giving our veterans, residents and community audience the opportunity to once again feel like a kid at a parade that celebrates the sacrifices our vets have given for our freedom.”
